Chemical Constituents and Components : Main chemical constitutes are punicalagin, ellagic acid, luteolin, quercetin, kaempferol, ellagitannins, anthocyanins (delphinidin, cyanidin, and pelargonidin) and EA-glycosides.
Action :
Tannins / Ellagic acid:
1. It reduces the risk of skin carcinogenesis induced by environmental chemicals.
2. It is useful to modulate polyaromatic hydrocarbon carcinogenesis.
3. It inhibites the binding of benzo[a]pyrene metabolites to DNA.
4. It induces transcription of the quinone reductase (QR) gene and act as antioxidant.
5. It shows significant increases in total hepatic glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, hepatic GST-Ya activity and hepatic GST-Ya mRNA.Curing Diseases : 1. It is used in dyspepsia, diarrhoea and dysentery.
2. It is helpful in inflammations of stomach.
3. Also used in heart pain and other cardiac problems.
