Chemical Constituents and Components : Main chemical components are vasicine, 2'-hydroxy -4-glucosyloxychalcone, vasicol, adhatodine, vasicinone, vasicinol, arachidic, cerotic, behenic, lignoceric, linoleic and oleic acids.
Action : Vasicine: 1. Vasicine stimulates the respiratory system. 2. It induces bronchodilation and relaxes the tracheal muscles. 3. It provides sigificant protection against histamine induced bronchospasm. 4. It reduces the elasticity and viscosity of tracheal mucus. 5. Vasicine also exhibites moderate hypotensive activity and cardiac-depressant effect. 6. It also shows anti-oxidation and hyaluronidase inhibiting activities, with improved moisture holding property. Alkaloids: 1. It showes both bronchodilatory and bronchoconstrictory activity. 2. It stimulates the respiratory system. 3. It shows potent anti-inflammatory effect. 4. It possesses abortifacient activities.
Curing Diseases : 1. The plant is used extensively for treating cold, cough, chronic bronchitis and asthma.
2. It can be used as sedative, expectorant and antispasmodic.
3. It is found to relieve asthma and nervous disability.
4. It is used in diarrhea and dysentery.
5. It is useful in haemoptysis and rheumatic pains.
Research Information : Extract of Adhatoda vasica shows potent antitussive effect. Studies show it is very helpful to controll cough and intravenously it was 1/20-1/40 on mechanically and electricallly induced coughing. (Ref.
